What to Expect at Your First Lash Appointment

Client lying back with eyes closed during a lash extension application

What happens at your first lash extension appointment?

Your first lash extension appointment takes about two hours. You lie down with your eyes closed while each extension is applied one at a time. It does not hurt and most people fall asleep. Come with clean, bare lashes and no eye makeup, and plan for a short consultation and mapping before application starts.

You will lie down on a heated bed with your eyes closed for about two hours while each extension is placed one at a time. It does not hurt. A lot of people fall asleep.

That is the whole thing. Everything below is detail so you know exactly what is coming.

How to prepare the day of

  • Come with clean, bare lashes. No mascara, no eyeliner, no eye cream. Any residue keeps the adhesive from bonding.
  • Leave contacts at home and wear glasses if you can. Two hours of closed eyes in contacts is uncomfortable.
  • Skip the extra coffee right before. You will be lying still for a while and caffeine makes eyelids flutter, which slows everything down.
  • Use the bathroom first. Once the application starts, stopping means removing the eye pads and restarting.
  • Wear something comfortable. The room is warm and you will not be moving.

The consultation

The first ten minutes are a conversation. Bring photos of the look you want, and be honest about your routine, your job, and how often you can come back.

Bridgette will look at your natural lash density and length, then tell you what your lashes can safely carry. Sometimes that matches the photo. Sometimes it means starting lighter and building over your next few fills.

This is also when you mention allergies, sensitive eyes, recent eye surgery, or a lash lift you had two months ago. All of it changes the plan.

Mapping and prep

Your lashes get cleansed with a foaming lash shampoo to strip oil and makeup. This step matters more than people realize, and skipping it is why some sets shed in a week.

Then your lash line gets mapped. Your artist marks out where the shorter lengths go and where the longer ones build, based on your eye shape. A rounded eye is mapped differently than an almond or hooded eye, which is how you avoid the flat, uniform look.

Soft gel pads go under your lower lashes to protect them and keep your bottom lashes out of the way. They feel cool. They do not hurt.

The application

Now your eyes close and stay closed. Two tweezers work at once. One isolates a single natural lash, the other places an extension a fraction of a millimeter from your lash line, never touching your skin.

You will hear tweezers clicking and feel light pressure near your lash line. Nothing sharp, nothing hot, no stinging. Adhesive fumes can make eyes water slightly if you peek, which is exactly why you keep them closed.

Time passes faster than you expect. Music plays, the room is quiet, and most people drift off within the first half hour. That is a compliment, not a problem.

If you get an itch, need to swallow, or want to shift your shoulders, just say so. Speak without opening your eyes and everything pauses.

The reveal and aftercare

At the end you get a nano mister to cure the adhesive faster, the pads come off, and you sit up slowly. Give your eyes a few seconds to adjust to the light.

The first look is a surprise for most people, because your eyes read open and awake without a scrap of makeup.

Before you leave you get the short list: keep them dry for 24 hours, cleanse daily after that, no oil-based products, no waterproof mascara, brush them each morning, and book your first fill for two to three weeks out.

The first 48 hours

You may feel slightly aware of your lashes for a day. That fades.

Some watering or mild redness in the first hours is normal. Itching, swelling, or burning that gets worse is not. Call and let your artist know rather than waiting it out.

Do not test them by tugging. New lashes feel fascinating and pulling one out takes your natural lash with it.

Frequently asked questions

Does getting lash extensions hurt?

No. Nothing touches your skin and no pulling is involved. The most common complaint is having to lie still, not discomfort.

How long does a first lash appointment take?

About two hours for classic and up to three for volume. Block off extra time so you are not rushed at the end.

Can I wear makeup to my lash appointment?

You can wear face makeup, but eyes must be completely clean. No mascara, no liner, no eye cream, no oily primer near the lash line.

What if I do not like them?

Say so before you leave. Length, curl, and density can be adjusted, and small changes are easy while you are still in the chair.

When should I book my first fill?

Two to three weeks out. Book it at the end of your first appointment, because fill slots fill up faster than full set slots.
