How Long Do Lash Extensions Last?

A set looks fullest on the day you leave my studio. Two weeks later it looks lighter, and nothing has gone wrong. Your own lashes have been shedding the whole time.

Why does a full set start to look thinner?

Each extension is bonded to one of your own lashes. Every natural lash grows, rests and sheds on its own schedule, and when a lash carrying an extension sheds, the extension goes with it.

You lose a few natural lashes every day. That is normal, and it is not a sign the set failed. That is why a set that looks full on day one looks lighter after a couple of weeks. I plan lash appointments around that cycle rather than against it.

It also means nobody can promise a set will last a fixed number of weeks. Your growth cycle, your skin and your habits all play a part, and they differ from person to person. What I can do is apply each extension to a healthy, single natural lash and show you the habits that keep the bond strong.

How often do I need a lash fill?

I book lash fills every 2 to 3 weeks. At a fill I remove grown out extensions, replace the ones that have shed and rebalance the set so it looks even again.

A fill works when most of the previous set is still attached, roughly half or more. If more than that has shed, a new full set rebuilds the line evenly. If you are not sure what is left, message me before you book and I will help you decide whether a fill or a new set makes more sense. What happens at a lash fill appointment?

You lie back with your eyes closed for the whole appointment, and it is easy to relax. I cleanse the lashes, check each natural lash and remove any extension that has grown too far out or twisted.

Then I place new extensions where lashes have shed, matching the length and curl you chose, and brush everything through so the set sits evenly. Come with clean lashes and no eye makeup. If something has irritated your eyes since your last visit, tell me before I start. If anything feels scratchy at the inner corner afterwards, tell me before you leave, because it is a quick fix in the chair.

What aftercare keeps a lash set full?

Small daily habits protect the bond between each extension and your natural lash. These are the ones that matter most.

• Keep lashes dry and away from steam, saunas and heavy sweating for the first 24 hours while the adhesive cures.
• Cleanse the lash line gently every day or two with a cleanser made for lash extensions.
• Avoid oil based removers and cleansers around the eyes.
• Do not rub, pull or pick at your lashes.
• Brush them each morning with a clean spoolie.
• Skip waterproof mascara.

Do classic, hybrid and volume sets last differently?

Not really. Every style follows the same natural shed cycle, so the time between fills is similar. What changes is how a set looks as it grows out.

A classic set, with one extension on each natural lash, tends to grow out softly. That makes it an easy choice for a simple routine. Fuller styles show gaps a little sooner as they shed.

Are lash extensions worth the upkeep?

That depends on your routine. With extensions you wake up with lashes already done and can skip mascara. The trade off is that they are an ongoing appointment, not a one time service.

If you would rather work with your own lashes and skip fills, a lash lift and tint may suit you better. It curls and darkens your natural lashes with nothing added and nothing to fill.

If your set is due, book your lash fill online within 2 to 3 weeks of your last visit, so I am filling a set rather than starting over. Studio appointments run Monday to Friday, 9 to 5.
